YouTube - Amazing Fire Illusion!:

"trompe l'oeil" from wikipedia is defined as:

Trompe-l' œ il, which can also be spelled without the hyphen in English as trompe l'oeil,[1] (French for 'trick the eye', pronounced is an art technique involving extremely realistic imagery in order to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects appear in three dimensions, instead of actually being a two-dimensional painting.

$3 device provides accelerated healing

In The World: Better wound treatment for all

A streamlined version of 'negative-pressure' wound therapy is put to the test in Haiti and could have 'enormous potential' across the developing world.

No one really knows why, but for an open wound, simply applying suction dramatically speeds healing times. (The theory is that the negative pressure draws bacteria out, and encourages circulation.) But for almost everyone, that treatment is out of reach--simply because the systems are expensive--rentals cost at least $100 a day and need to be recharged every six hours.
No more. Danielle Zurovcik, a doctoral student at MIT, has created a hand-powered suction-healing system that costs about $3. The device is composed of an airtight wound dressing, connected by a plastic tube to a cylinder with accordion-like folds. Squeezing it creates the suction, which lasts as long as there's no air leak. What's more, where regular dressings need to be replaced up to three times a day--a painful ordeal--the new cuff can be left on for several days.

A man ahead of his time

Found this video of Peter Daymon Schwartz, evidently a lead in to a company meeting along with co-founder of Daymon Associates, Milton Sender.  circa 1990, Peter is talking about open decision making, importance of family, and ability to grow in the company.

Note: Peter's office was on the 47th floor of 500 Fifth Ave in NYC.  You can hear the traffic in the background because the windows are open.

Nature by the Numbers

This work is not only beautiful, but inspiring.  from

The animation begins by presenting a series of numbers. This is a very famous and recognized sequence since many centuries ago in the Western World thanks to Leonardo of Pisa, a thirteenth century Italian mathematician, also called Fibonacci. So it is known as even although it had been described much earlier by Indian mathematicians.

Fibonacci Series

Fibonacci Series

This is an infinite sequence of natural numbers where the first value is 0, the next is 1 and, from there, each amount is obtained by adding the previous two.

The Fun Theory - Piano Staircase

2009-09-22 14:15 0 Kommentarer
”Take the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator and feel better” is something we often hear or read in the Sunday papers. Few people actually follow that advice. Can we get more people to take the stairs over the escalator by making it fun to do? See the results here

Free course on Guitar Making from MIT

Here's a free guide from the folks at MIT on how to make an electric guitar.

  • Building the Guitar
  • Physics of the Guitar
  • Guides (sanding, Soldering etc.)
In this class, students learn about physics principles by examining the physics responsible for producing music with electronic stringed instruments, while building, testing, and playing their own electric guitar. Students will design their own Guitar bodies, construct their own pick-ups, assemble their own guitars, tune them using a chromatic tuner, and use them to play a simple song.
